An effort for promotion of innovation and popularization of Science and Math |
Introduction
Science and Math are generally considered as subjects to which student show uneasiness. Learning level of students along with conceptual clarity in these subjects is also remains a matter of concern. Keeping in mind the learning gaps of students in an internal achievement survey, ‘PRAYAS’ was designed in district Bilaspur in 2015-16 with the following objectives.
- To overcome fear of Science & Maths as a subject among students
- To learn science & Maths factually and dissolve rote method
- To improve scientific attitude & Improve Mathematical skills
- To raise community participation in school related activities
- To boost peer group learning
Plan
PRAYAS was a strategic plan for the progression of Science and Maths at elementary level in the district. Among/for the identified hard spots, demonstration models were prepared by students as a part of classroom teaching under the guidance of oriented teachers. Thereafter, models were exhibited & demonstrated by students at school level fair, in front of all the other students, teachers, monitoring officials, invited community members & PRIs.
About 12000 students from 6th to 8th class of 252 upper primary schools got benefitted by PRAYAS directly or indirectly.
40 models from 10 themes in Science & 23 models from 5 themes in Mathematics were selected. A strategy was made to enhance the teaching and learning skills of the teachers and further in classroom with the students in workshop mode followed by a Science and Math fairs.

Out Come
PRAYAS was appreciated and accepted at every level by students, teachers & community. It was publicized and highlighted in exhibitions (via flex, brochures, models etc.), print media (news papers), audio/video, documentation etc. Peer group learning & community participation emerged as strengths of PRAYAS.
After its success in district Bilaspur, it was launched by Hon’able Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh on 26th June, 2016 to replicate in other districts of HP in 2016-17 and now PRAYAS is being running state wide.
PRAYAS PLUS
Since PRAYAS had been already implemented in Bilaspur district, so after series of conversation with teachers and heads & feedback from students, PRAYAS was linked solely with syllabus to take PRAYAS to its next level PRAYAS PLUS in 2016 with following objectives:
- To link PRAYAS solely with syllabus.
- To improve quality in learning of Science and Maths at elementary level.
- To overcome fear of Science and Math and to improve Scientific & Mathematical skills
- To raise community participation in school activities & to boost peer group learning
PLAN
- PRAYAS PLUS is an attempt for quality improvement in Science & Maths (std 6th to 8th ) and to popularize these subjects . It will be implemented in the district jointly by DIET & PRATHAM (NGO).
- Among/for the identified hard spots, demonstration models (70 Science & 50 Maths) will be prepared by students with the support of trained teachers
- These models will be demonstrated by students in school level fairs in the presence of students, teachers, invited community members etc.
- Fairs will be organized in schools having strength 30 or more than 30. In rest of schools worksheets will be provided and they will be clubbed with the nearby school at least on the day of fair.
- All the models are directly linked with syllabus.
- Around 12000 students will be benefitted directly or in directly by it.
